Every year it's the same routine: order something "personal" from a giant website, watch it ship from three states away, and hand over a gift that could have gone to anyone, anywhere. Evansville can do better — because Evansville makes better.

This guide is from one small Evansville workshop: ours. Everything below is cast, poured, and finished by hand at SJS Homemade, right here in town — and delivered to Evansville front doors for free on Saturdays. But it's also a working guide: how to pick a scent for somebody else, which wick to choose, how to get the longest burn out of a candle, and what to do with the vessel when the wax is gone.

Why a gift made 10 minutes away beats one shipped 1,000 miles

  • It's actually one of one. Each concrete vessel is hand-cast and finished individually. The grain, the marbling, the tiny imperfections — no second one exactly like it exists. Your gift isn't "limited edition." It's the only edition.
  • It's poured after you order. Your candle doesn't sit on a warehouse shelf for a year. It's poured within 24 hours of your paid order, in the scent and wick you chose.
  • The gift outlives the gift. When the candle burns down, the handmade concrete vessel stays — a catchall, a décor piece, a little planter. Most candles leave a jar for the trash. Ours leaves a keepsake.
  • The money stays here. Every order goes to a local maker who'll probably be the one handing it to you at the door on Saturday.

How to pick a candle scent for somebody else (the useful part)

Buying a candle for yourself is easy — you know what you like. Buying for someone else is where people freeze. After pouring a lot of candles for a lot of Evansville homes, here's what actually works:

1. Match the room it'll live in.

  • Kitchen → food scents: cinnamon, apple, coffee-shop warmth. Our pick: Ohio Orchard Spice or Riverbend Pumpkin Spice.
  • Living room → cozy and warm: vanilla, pumpkin, baked goods. Riverbend Pumpkin Latte lives here.
  • Bedroom/bathroom → soft and clean: Midnight Raspberry Cream (black raspberry + vanilla) is sweet without being heavy.

2. When you know nothing, go bakery-vanilla. Vanilla-based and bakery scents are the safest gift on Earth. Almost nobody dislikes them, they read "warm home" in every season, and they don't fight with cooking smells. Riverfront Vanilla Noel is our safest pour.

3. Go easy on florals for people you don't know well. Rose and lilac lovers love them — but they're personal. If you're not sure she's a floral person, don't guess with Riverfront Rose Romance. Save it for someone you know keeps fresh flowers on the table.

4. Strong personalities get strong scents. Woodsy, rich River City Mahogany is the one men actually claim for themselves — offices, dens, garages that are trying to be dens.

5. Still stuck? Take Scott's Picks. We've already done the matching on the homepage: Terracotta → Riverbend Pumpkin Latte, Tidepool → Riverfront Raspberry Fizz, Dusk Sky → Midnight Raspberry Cream. Three proven pairings, zero guessing.

Cotton wick or wood wick? (Both are included — here's how to choose)

Every SJS candle is $28 with either wick included, so this choice is about the person, not the price:

Gifting and not sure? Wood wick. The crackle is the thing people text you about a week later.

What $28 actually buys (the honest math)

No upsells, no tiers, no "plus $3 for the good wick":

  • $28.00 — one-of-one hand-cast concrete vessel + your scent + either wick + the pour
  • $1.96 — Indiana sales tax (7%)
  • $0.00 — Saturday delivery within Evansville city limits (no minimum order)
  • = $29.96 at your door

Compare that to a mass-market candle at a big-box store that was poured on another continent last spring, in a glass jar headed for the landfill. Ours was poured this week, in your city, in a vessel that stays in the home for years.

Gifts by person

For the one who just moved in

A housewarming gift that isn't a bottle of wine: pick a vessel in their new home's colors and a welcoming scent like Ohio Orchard Spice (warm apple and cinnamon). Realtors — this is also why we do closing gifts: an Evansville-made keepsake for handover day beats a generic gift basket every time.

For the cozy-homebody

For the hard-to-buy-for

Clean and classic: Midnight Raspberry Cream in the Dusk Sky vessel. It's the combination first-time buyers land on most, and it has never once been re-gifted (that we know of).

For the holiday traditionalist

The seasonal shelf is open: River City Elf Mischief, Riverfront Vanilla Noel, and Riverbend Pumpkin Spice are holiday pours. When the season ends, so do they.

For the person who "doesn't want anything"

They say that every year. What they mean is they don't want clutter. A candle is the rare gift that's allowed to be used up — and this one leaves behind a handmade vessel instead of an empty jar. Problem solved, both ways.

How to make the candle last (and smell its best)

Whoever receives your gift can get more out of it with these habits. Always follow the care label supplied with the candle:

  1. First burn: give it time. Aim for an even melt pool while staying within the burn-session limit on your candle’s care label. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Full story: The first burn is everything.
  2. Trim the wick before every burn. Let the candle cool and follow the trimming instructions supplied for your chosen wick.
  3. Burn in sessions, not marathons. Follow the maximum burn time and stop-use instructions on your candle’s care label. Use a heat-safe surface and let the vessel cool before handling.

After the last burn: 6 lives for the vessel

This is the part factory candles can't copy. Once the candle has cooled, remove the remaining wax according to the supplied care instructions. Do not pour wax down a drain. Clean the vessel for non-food use, and the handmade concrete piece stays:

  1. Catchall by the front door — keys, change, the mail you swear you'll file
  2. Planter for a succulent (add a suitable liner)
  3. Bathroom jar — cotton balls, swabs, bath salt
  4. Desk cup — pens that finally have a home with some weight to it
  5. Vanity tray piece — rings and watches at night
  6. Keepsake dish — a home for little mementos on the office desk

How ordering works (and the delivery map in plain English)

  1. Pick the vessel from the one-of-one collection — or shortcut with Scott's Picks.
  2. Choose scent and wick. Either wick included; every complete 10 oz candle is $28 flat.
  3. We pour within 24 hours of your paid order.
  4. Free Saturday delivery within Evansville city limits — downtown, Haynie's Corner, the north, east, and west sides. No minimum order. A little outside the line? Call Scott — free pickup by arrangement, and we'll talk options.

The holiday calendar (read this part twice)

Handmade runs on a calendar, not a conveyor belt. Saturday delivery days before Christmas:

  • Sat Nov 28 · Sat Dec 5 · Sat Dec 12 — regular Saturday deliveries
  • Wed Dec 16 — last day to order for Christmas delivery
  • Sat Dec 19 — final delivery day before Christmas

After the 16th, we're happy to arrange pickup — but the Saturday sleigh is parked.

Quick answers

Can I send one directly as a gift? Order it to their Evansville address for Saturday delivery, or pick it up yourself and hand it over in person — most people do the second; the vessel is half the presentation.

I'm a realtor / I need several. Call Scott at (812) 329-0371 to talk quantities and timing for closing gifts — every one is still poured to order, so lead time matters.

What if they don't like the scent? There's a 15-day returns policy on the site, and Scott personally answers every question — you'll talk to the maker, not a call center.

Do you ship? Right now we're local-first: Evansville delivery and pickup. Local is how we keep the quality (and the free delivery) real.

A gift that was made here

Downtown, Haynie's Corner, the east side, the west side — this city is full of homes that deserve something made with actual hands in the same zip codes. If you're shopping for someone in Evansville this year, start with something from Evansville.

👉 Build their candle — pick the vessel, pick the scent, and we'll pour it within 24 hours.

Questions about a gift, a quantity, or a closing-gift order? Call or text Scott at (812) 329-0371 — you'll get the maker, not a call center.
